This old family favourite came from a German friend, though it began as a Swedish recipe. It’s especially good warm with cold whipped cream.

Ingredients
- 3 medium eggs
- 200 g sugar
- 175 g butter
- 125 ml milk
- 300 g flour
- 3 teaspoons baking powder
- 5 large apples, sliced
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 4 tablespoons sugar
- Cold whipped cream, for serving
Method
- Preheat the oven to 190 °C. Grease or line a sheet-cake tray.
- Warm the milk and butter together until just combined.
- Sift the flour with the baking powder.
- Beat the eggs well. Add the sugar and beat until dissolved.
- Add the milk and butter mixture and beat well.
- Sift in the flour mixture and stir until combined.
- Spread the batter in the tray and smooth the top.
- Arrange the apple slices over the batter and sprinkle with the cinnamon and sugar.
- Bake for about 15 minutes. If the cake browns too quickly, turn off the lower heat and switch on the upper heat to finish cooking.
- Serve with cold whipped cream.
